How to Prepare Samples for Aflatoxin Testing for Food Safety

Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain molds found on foods such as peanuts, pistachios, cereals, and dried fruits. Because permitted levels are extremely low—often just 5 parts per billion—precise, consistent sample preparation is critical for accurate testing. In this video, see how Silverson mixers can be used in the preparation of samples for aflatoxin testing as we demonstrate a typical 50:50 pistachio nuts and water mix. Slurrying the sample in water avoids the heat issues of dry milling, which can degrade aflatoxins and distort test results. High shear mixing also provides more uniform particle size reduction and improved batch-to-batch consistency.
