Some years ago, Dan got a used Bachmann OO scale Hogwarts Express train set for his wife, Nichole. It’s been a staple of Dan & Nichole’s annual indoor holiday display, which includes a temporary train layout. Though part of a fantasy story, the model of 5972 is based on a real locomotive that still exists in the UK. In the past Dan has done videos on this locomotive, showing how he modified the pilot truck so it stopped derailing, and how he replaced the motor. This year Dan (with Nichole’s permission) decided to install a LokSound DCC and sound decoder into this engine. Dan hasn’t done a DCC install on a British prototype before, so this was something new. Because of the model’s poor electrical pickup, Dan decided to add a LokSound Power Pack stay-alive capacitor. This helps to keep the engine rolling if the wheels momentarily lose contact. Dan also added some pickups to the tender.
