Unlike other bulbous plants, such as tulips, flower induction and differentiation occurs after planting the bulbs, when the third or fourth leaf appears, that is, after 4 to 8 weeks. This duration varies depending on temperature, not light. Gladiolus flowers when daylight hours are longer than 12 hours. It is a long-day species and is a heliophilous (sun-loving) plant, so it requires a lot of light; if this is insufficient, the plants will not flower. For this reason, when grown in a greenhouse during the winter months, artificial lighting is necessary.
