The history of the Mitsubishi Colt T120ss began in 1989, when Mitsubishi's sole agent in Indonesia collaborated with Suzuki's sole agent. They planned to jointly develop a small commercial vehicle, eventually creating a twin or rebadged product. Initially, they planned to develop a 1000cc commercial vehicle. For Mitsubishi, this vehicle was planned to be the successor to the Mitsubishi Jetstar, while for Suzuki, it was intended to replace the Suzuki Carry Extra. They then conducted research to find out what kind of commercial vehicle the Indonesian public needed. It turned out that the public needed a commercial vehicle slightly larger than the 1000cc segment. More specifically, people missed the Mitsubishi Colt T120, which had ceased production in 1981, and wanted a similar commercial vehicle to be produced again. Indeed, in the mid to late 1980s, there was a gap in the market segment for non-snout commercial vehicles. There was a small commercial vehicle segment with 1000cc engines, such as the Suzuki Carry, Mitsubishi Jetstar, and Daihatsu Hijet Zebra, and the segment above that jumped straight to 1600cc, with the much larger Mitsubishi Colt L300. The gap between 1000cc and 1600cc was completely empty, and it only began to fill in 1989 with the introduction of the Daihatsu Zebra S89. Yet, the 1300-1400cc segment was precisely what the public needed, a segment previously abandoned by the Mitsubishi Colt T120. This led to the sole agents for Suzuki and Mitsubishi changing their plans. They upgraded the specifications of the commercial vehicles they would produce together to become commercial vehicles in the 1300-1400cc segment. In this video, we describe the Mitsubishi Colt T120ss variants officially sold in Indonesia since 1991. These include standard pickups, flat-deck pickups, and 3-way wide-deck pickups, along with a bus chassis that served as the basis for minibuses and public transportation (angkots or microbuses). We also showcase the Colt T120ss minibuses officially designed by Mitsubishi's sole agent: the Colt T120ss Lotus and the Colt T120ss Pasola, manufactured by the Lautan Berlian bodywork shop.
