How To Turn a Dry Vocal Into a Wide, Ambient Soundscape

This is how I turn a plain vocal into a full soundscape. For the hook of "Houseboy Johnny" I went completely off the rails with vocal production — wild delays, unique distortion, reverse reverbs, distorted doubles and harmonies to emphasize key moments, a Splice vocal sample warped into the empty spaces to act like a ghostly delay, and even some freestyle humming I sculpted with the marquee tool to behave like its own effect coming from somewhere else entirely. This isn't a step-by-step formula. It's a look into how I approach vocals as an instrument and a texture, not just something sitting on top of a beat.
