In Genesis 14:13, Abraham is first called a Hebrew. However, an interesting fact is that this expression was not a name Abraham gave himself, but rather a name derived from the perspective of those around him. The original Hebrew word "Ivri" carries the nuance of one who has crossed the boundary, one who does not belong to this side. Then, where did the name Israel originate? The answer lies in a much more dramatic scene. A man wrestling all night by a dark river, and a completely new name given to him before dawn. That name would later become the name of an entire nation. And the final name, "Jew," was actually born amidst the ruins after the nation had fallen. How did the name of a single tribe out of the twelve come to represent an entire people?
