Spurn Point Fine Art Long Exposure Photography
Spurn Point Fine Art Long Exposure Photography Spurn Point has become one of my favourite locations for creating fine art long exposure photography. Situated on the dramatic east coast of Yorkshire, this unique spit of land offers endless photographic opportunities, particularly its weathered wooden groynes that stretch out into the North Sea. These timeless structures provide strong leading lines and minimalist compositions that are perfectly suited to my style of landscape photography. For this shoot I was using my trusted Nikon Z9 paired with the versatile NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens. This combination gives me exceptional image quality, outstanding dynamic range and the flexibility to compose both wide scenic views and tighter, more intimate studies of the groynes disappearing into the sea. Creating the fine art look is all about slowing down time. To achieve this I rely on my NiSi JetMag Pro Neutral Density filters together with a CPL polarising filter. The ND filters allow me to extend my shutter speeds from several seconds to well over a minute, transforming the crashing waves into a silky, ethereal mist while the clouds streak dramatically across the sky. The CPL filter helps remove unwanted reflections, controls glare and enhances contrast, giving the final image a clean and refined appearance. A sturdy tripod is an essential part of my kit, ensuring complete stability during these long exposures. Even the slightest vibration can soften an image, so keeping everything rock solid is vital when exposures last 30, 60 or even 120 seconds. Preparation is just as important as the camera equipment. Fine art photography is heavily dependent on the conditions, so I spent time planning the shoot using several mobile phone apps. I checked the tide tables to ensure that high tide coincided with sunset, giving me enough water around the groynes to create balanced compositions. I also watched the weather forecasts carefully, looking for a gentle breeze to add movement to the clouds without making them disappear completely. A dramatic overcast sky provides the perfect finishing touch, adding atmosphere and mood to every frame. Fine art long exposure photography isn't simply about taking a photograph—it's about creating an interpretation of the landscape. At Spurn Point, the combination of minimalist compositions, flowing water and dramatic skies allows me to produce images that feel calm, timeless and almost dreamlike. It's this creative process that makes long exposure photography my favourite genre, and every visit to this remarkable Yorkshire coastline offers a new opportunity to create something unique.
