Inside a 3-Acre Agroforestry Farm 🌳 | Rosewood, Red Sandalwood & Mahogany
📍 Parthana Farms, Reddiyarpatti Village, Palayamkottai Taluk, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu 📅 Interview Date: 16 June 2026 🎬 *Part 3 of the Mr. Subbaraman Documentary Series* In this episode of Tamil Agropreneur, we visit Parthana Farms, a three-acre agroforestry project developed by 78-year-old farmer Mr. Subbaraman. Rather than focusing on a single crop, this farm has been designed as an integrated system where timber trees, fruit trees, bananas, and natural soil management work together to create both regular income and long-term wealth. --- 🌳 Farm Overview • Farm Size: 3 Acres • Red Soil • Three independent irrigation zones • Designed as a long-term agroforestry system The farm is divided into three separate irrigation blocks: 🌳 Zone 1 – Rosewood Plantation • Around 400 Rosewood trees • Approximately 2–3 years old • Trees already reaching 15–18 feet 🌳 Zone 2 – Red Sandalwood Plantation • Around 400 Red Sandalwood trees • Most trees around 20 feet tall • Excellent growth in red soil • A small section planted with Mahogany 🌳 Zone 3 – Mahogany Plantation • Around 400 Mahogany trees • Healthy, uniform establishment • Empty spaces immediately replanted --- 🌴 Border Plantation The entire farm boundary is planted with teak. Highlights include: • Around 200–250 teak trees • Approximately 10 years old • Largest tree nearly 40 inches in circumference Mr. Subbaraman explains that proper pruning is one of the biggest factors influencing future timber quality. --- 🍌 Continuous Income Through Intercropping Instead of planting all banana suckers at once, he staggered planting over time. Today the farm contains nearly **1,000 banana plants**, including: • Red Banana • Karpuravalli • Sevvazhai • Nendran • Savala This ensures harvests are spread throughout the year rather than arriving all at once. --- 🥭 Fruit Trees The farm also includes: • Alphonso Mango • Imam Pasand Mango • Thangapazham Mango • Lemon • Jackfruit • Saya Fruit • Other seasonal fruit trees Lemons are marketed through local grocery shops, while different mango varieties provide seasonal income. --- 🍂 Natural Soil Management Nothing leaves the farm. Fallen leaves, twigs, and crop residues remain on the ground, where they naturally decompose into organic matter. According to Mr. Subbaraman: "Nature already knows how to do the work. We simply have to help it." This natural mulching system improves soil moisture, supports soil life, and reduces dependence on external inputs. --- 🌿 Future Plans Mr. Subbaraman is evaluating black pepper as a future intercrop. His reasoning is practical: Unlike cocoa, even small quantities of pepper can be sold easily through local grocery shops. For him, successful farming always begins with market accessibility. --- 🏗️ Systems Thinking Perspective Parthana Farms is more than a timber plantation. It is an integrated agricultural system where every component supports another. • Timber trees build long-term wealth. • Bananas generate regular cash flow. • Fruit trees diversify income. • Natural mulch enriches the soil. • Independent irrigation zones improve water efficiency. • Labour is managed through a weekly rotation across three farms. The result is a resilient farm designed not for a single season—but for decades. --- 🌱 About Tamil Agropreneur Tamil Agropreneur explores agriculture through Systems Thinking, business architecture, and long-term field documentation.
