An Abyssinian well, also known as a needle well, is a small-diameter borehole used to extract water from underground at a shallow depth, typically 5-12 m (18-25 m). The well is constructed using a plastic pipe (HDPE, PP, or 32 mm metal pipe), with a filter (stainless steel mesh, polymer mesh, or HDPE filter) at the bottom. Water is pumped from this structure using a hand pump, a self-priming centrifugal surface pump, or a gasoline pump. This type of well is quick to construct and much less expensive than a well designed for a submersible pump. It is not suitable for all types of water bodies! It is suitable only in sandy aquifers where the static water level is no more than 8 m. The depth of the well itself can be anywhere from 10-20-30 meters or more.
