The final four people trapped for 10 days inside a flooded underground cave in the central Xaisomboun Province of Laos have been successfully rescued by international rescue teams. One person had already been rescued on Friday, and with the remaining four emerging from the cave on Saturday evening (May 30), all five survivors have now been brought to safety unharmed. On May 20, a group of seven villagers entered the abandoned mine-like cave in search of hidden gold and wild animals. Heavy rainfall and landslides caused the cave entrance to collapse, trapping them inside. One individual managed to escape immediately and alerted authorities. Rescue teams pumped muddy floodwater out of the cave, significantly lowering the water level. As a result, the remaining four survivors were able to walk and crawl out of the cave on their own, avoiding an extremely dangerous diving rescue operation. In addition to rescue teams from Laos and Thailand, expert divers from countries including Australia, France, Indonesia, and Finland — many of whom were involved in the 2018 Thailand Tham Luang cave rescue — also assisted in the mission. Although the survivors suffered from dehydration and exhaustion after spending 10 days without food and water, they were reported to be in stable condition when rescued and were immediately taken for medical treatment. Two other members of the group remain missing. Survivors said they may have traveled around 500 meters deeper into the cave.
