Herring’s Law/Response
While we have the ability to willfully close one eye at a time, due to the way our brains are wired, the nerves that serve the muscles that open our eyes always drive at the same strength on both sides. This is one facet of “Herring’s law of equal innervation.” In conditions where one side’s voluntary eyelid opening muscle (levator palpebrae) does not work as well as the other side, the brain is unable to selectively drive the” bad” eyelid harder. It is forced to overdrive the nerves on both sides to get the bad eye to open as much as possible. Watch the video to understand how this limitation can easily lead to missing a diagnosis of two sided eyelid droop (“bilateral ptosis”) when one side is worse than the other. Definitive treatment is surgical. Alternatively, in some cases, prescription drops like #upneeq can recruit the help of a different eyelid opening muscle (Mueller’s muscle) to generate beautiful improvements without surgery. Drops can also come in handy to treat eyelid ptosis caused by Botox. 👉 Tag someone who would find this fascinating! —— #eyelid #ptosis #browlift #herringslaw #ptosisrepair —— 📸 Free photo screening and all current prices are available exclusively through the link in my bio
