Section 1b reviews the therapy hierarchy. Therapy should start with isolated sounds and then move on to syllables, words and conversation. It's necessary to teach the child that air should escape through the mouth and not the nose for the sounds affected by cleft palate. It's also important to remember that oral motor exercises, such as blowing bubbles or tongue movements, should never be used in therapy. There are no studies that support their efficacy.
