It was a bit of a parts bin Frankenstein build of pieces from various BMWs of the era. A turbocharged inline 6 that was not a bespoke high revving naturally aspirated ///M specific engine, suspension parts from that generation's E90 M3 and a slightly new formula that started to change the direction of M cars. These are properly rare, with a bit over 6000 produced, which is low production compared to the approximately 30,000 F87 M2s that were built. The rarity, the awkward transition phase, the slightly different naming convention all make this an M car that feels slightly forgotten.
