Performed during the Honjo Gion Festival, this dynamic three-lion dance is dedicated to praying for protection from disease, good health, abundant harvests, and the prosperity of the local community. It is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture. The tradition is believed to date back to 1663. When a periodic raw-silk market was relocated from Hanzawa Village, now part of Fukaya City, to the historic post town of Honjo, parishioners of Daimachi’s Yasaka Shrine offered a lion dance in the hope that the town would prosper. Yasaka Shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a heroic deity known for his courage and powerful spirit. Reflecting the character of this deity, the Daimachi Lion Dance is distinguished by its exceptionally bold, vigorous, and dramatic movements, even among the many three-lion dances found throughout Japan. During the festival, the dancers perform at four sacred sites located to the east, west, north, and south of Daimachi: Yasaka Shrine, Yakushido Temple, Okariya, and Shimo-Yakushi. These ceremonial performances are intended to protect the town from epidemics and misfortune entering from outside, while praying for the health and well-being of its people. The dance is also known as the “Rain-Praying Lion Dance,” as local tradition holds that rain would miraculously fall after it was performed. In earlier times, the Daimachi Lion Dance was sometimes supported financially by wealthy local patrons and benefactors. In return, a ceremonial performance would be presented in the garden of the supporting household. Such gardens were therefore not merely performance spaces, but also important places symbolizing the faith, generosity, and support of the local community. The image of “golden grasses entwining around our feet” may be understood as a poetic expression of a garden so prosperous and magnificent that even the grass beneath the dancers appears to shine like gold. The verse may therefore express not only admiration for the garden itself, but also gratitude and respect toward the people who welcomed and supported the lion dance.
