What If Feels Like For A Girl (Madonna)

I’m sharing a live performance of a favourite song each month this year. August's offering is just in time...today, I'm performing "What It Feels Like For A Girl", written by Madonna Ciccone and Guy Sigsworth. I love this song for three reasons: firstly, it asks the listener to think, rather than telling the listener what they should think - I always appreciate songs that do this! Secondly, it's economical with both words and music, and sticks to one clear message. I try really hard to do this in my own songwriting, but I confess often I'm far from economical with words! I'll keep working on it... Thirdly, and sadly, the lyrics have kept their relevance. Around the world, many women and girls face discrimination on the basis of sex and gender. Gender inequality underpins many problems affecting women and girls disproportionately, including domestic and sexual violence, lower pay, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare. I chose this song today because right now I'm thinking of all of the women and girls from Afghanistan who have been granted asylum, and are starting a new life in a new country. I hope that they will be met with compassion and generosity, wherever they end up. I'm also thinking of all of the women and girls who remain in Afghanistan and face a future in which it's unclear whether or not their rights will be respected and upheld. Here's hoping we all do whatever we can to help them.
