Enlightener Prize. Lecture: Love in Byzantium. Sergey Ivanov, a Byzantinist historian, specialist in medieval culture, and author of many books, including "In Search of Constantinople" and "A Thousand Years of Illumination," is a 2010 Enlightener Prize laureate. On May 24, 2014, the Enlightener Prize presented a lecture series on love from a scientific perspective, "The Science of Love," as part of the Polytech Festival of Science and Curiosity. The lectures took place on the festival's main stage on Industrial Square, opposite the Cosmos Pavilion at the All-Russian Exhibition Center. About the lecture: It seems difficult to imagine a more severe and rigorous society than the Byzantine one. Monastic asceticism, a state imposing moral norms on its subjects, clothing that concealed the body, the primacy of the spiritual over the carnal—these are what come to mind when one thinks of Byzantium.
