As a strategically important landmark, the Kaiserberg has been the site of various fortifications since prehistoric times. In the early Middle Ages, the Kaiserberg marked a point on the border between the Merovingian Frankish Empire and the Saxon Empire. Even today, remnants of ditches and ramparts bear witness to the fact that the Kaiserberg was fortified and used as a castle at various times. For example, a section of rampart with a ditch in front has been preserved. This was probably built in prehistoric times. It is assumed that this fortification is related to the Iron Age settlement in the area. According to this, the Romans are also said to have taken possession of this militarily important site, presumably with a forward guard post. The moat system was later renewed again, as a newer, presumably early medieval, rampart and another ditch overlap the older system. This renewal may be related to the expansion of the Imperial Palace in Duisburg in the 10th century. The high rampart with its moat in front, built on the main ridge of the Kaiserberg, may also have been built around this time. It was only much later, i.e., in modern times, that another, so-called "castle" with an observation tower was built on the Kaiserberg.
