Today we read the 8th chapter of Revelation, together with Father Oleg Stenyaev. The opening of the seventh seal—what follows? Hail and fire mingled with blood, a blazing fire cast into the sea, the star "wormwood," the destruction of a third of the sun, moon, and stars... "And when He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels who stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets" (Rev. 8:1-2). The description of this event is very reminiscent of the destruction of the city of Jericho—a story from the Book of Joshua. There, too, there were consecrated trumpets, and when they sounded, the walls of Jericho crumbled. Andrew of Caesarea writes in his "Interpretation": "St. John often uses the number seven angels because it corresponds to this age, the Sabbath, and the rest of the saints." Therefore, the opening of this seventh seal indicates the transition from earthly life, facilitated by seven angels, who strike down those in need of admonition and instruction. "Silence" signifies decorum, reverence, and the angels' ignorance of the time of the Second Coming. "Half an hour" signifies the shortness of time when, after the chastisement and the end of the world, Christ's Kingdom will come. 📜 Read the Book of Revelation.
