The Hand Plane Mistake That Makes It Completely Useless
My dad used to say, "Damn, boy — that's just plain wrong." This video is dedicated to him. I sharpened my blade, put my number 5 jack plane back together, and headed to the shooting board to test it. What followed was one of the most embarrassingly useless passes I've ever made on a piece of hard maple. The plane did absolutely nothing — and I mean nothing — for a reason that took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out. If you're new to hand tools, this one's for you. I'm going to show you exactly what I did wrong, why it happens, and how to fix it in under a minute. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 — "Damn, boy, that's just plain wrong" — dad's famous words 0:37 — Meet the number 5 jack plane — can you spot the mistake? 0:45 — Disassembly and sharpening the blade 2:12 — Did you catch it?
