Born in 1945 in Kujjar (Sheikhupura, now in Pakistan), he learnt under the divine guidance of Satguru Pratap Singh Ji and Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji, and went on to study with masters like Pt. Mahadev Prasad and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. His music was never mere performance — it was prarthana, a prayer. He witnessed history being created when Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji composed in halves and quarter beats, and it is because of him that we today have the notations of those rare and exquisite compositions. As a teacher, he inspired generations of Namdhari kirtaniyas and classical singers, patiently passing on not just notes, but a way of life. His humour and radiant smile kept even Satguru Ji in good cheer. Recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, he leaves behind not just awards and accolades, but a community of students — carrying forward his sur, his seva, and his spirit.
