Duane Allman - Part 1 - Stormy Monday
Duane Allman has been my favorite guitar player since I was 15. Something about his tone and touch just cuts right to my soul. He was super creative, took lots of risks and played like he knew he didn't have a lot of time here on earth. Lots of other players have moved me but none have had the same impact as the o'l Skydog. This is the first in what will hopefully be a series of Duane solos that have been painstakingly transcribed by ear, direct from the original recordings. I thought I'd kick it off with the Allmans' rendition of the blues classic "Stormy Monday" from the At Fillmore East album. It contains what I consider to be the definitive Duane Allman slow blues solo (in conventional style playing.) Note the incredible nuance he puts in his string bending. Duane would frequently push notes just a little bit sharp to create tension, and he uses that technique to great effect in this solo. I tried my best to get as close as I could, but some of those bends are just too subtle to get exact. Technical note - this is my trusty old '92 LP with Fralin pickups being played directly into GarageBand with a crappy Marshall model dialed to sound as close to Duane as I could get it. It sucks, but it's better than playing DI. One of these days I'll get an attenuator so I can record my real Marshall at volumes that won't make my wife leave me. Anyway, please subscribe and comment. Thanks!
