Analog Whelen WS-2020 Siren Test - Full Alert - Chaska, Minnesota
Date: 4/1/20 Location: Stoughton Avenue and Crystal Place, Chaska Minnesota Temp: 55°F Signal: 3 minute alert Units Heard: Whelen WS-2020 (main unit) - 180ft Federal Signal 2001-130 - 0.9 miles Federal Signal 2001-130 - 1.1 miles Whelen WPS-2805 - 2.2 miles (435hz) Whelen WPS-2750 - 2.7 miles (560hz) Whelen WPS-2805 - 3.1 miles (435hz) NOTE: As of May 2020, this siren has been replaced by a Federal Signal 2001-130. After the 11AM test in Hudson and lunch at Culver’s, Duncan, Zach, and I headed over to Chaska for the 1PM test in Minnesota. Chaska is rather famous for their former system of Allertors (which are all now gone, replaced by 2001-130s), but very few people know about this little gem - an analog Whelen WS-2020 just east of downtown on Stoughton Avenue, next to a bike trail. We don’t really know when (or why) this was installed, considering that they switched over to Federal Signal only a few years later when a Federal Signal 2001-DC was installed at the golf course, but it’s still here and still works. According to the Chaska Public Works Department, this will be replaced by a new Federal Signal siren (2001-130) this summer, just as the Allertors were in prior years. Carver County ended up sounding their sirens at 12:58 (2 minutes early), which seems to be a regular occurrence for them. It was pretty quiet, but for a 25 year old Whelen (which likely has not been serviced in a very long time), it wasn’t bad. Scott County across the Minnesota River ended up testing right at 1, and ran them until 1:03, so after the WS-2020 shuts off, you can hear Shakopee’s Whelens running from an impressive 2 miles away. I hope you enjoy the video! Carver County tests their siren system on the first Wednesday of every month at 1PM March-October.
