The Family That Refused Every Buyer for 112 Years — Then Ran Out of Money Alone

The Ingersoll Milling Machine Company started in 1885 as a small Cleveland machine shop and grew, under four generations of one family, into a builder of some of the largest machine tools ever made, including the largest milling machine in the world in both 1902 and 1953. Ingersoll invented the transfer line for automatic engine-block machining in the 1920s and built the world's first CNC-integrated transfer line in 1966. Unlike almost every other company in this history, it was never acquired by an outside conglomerate — the founding family kept ownership almost entirely to itself for over a century, at one point legally locking shares in a trust until 2021. That same refusal to bring in outside capital or sell off underperforming divisions in time left the company with nowhere to turn when its finances collapsed at the turn of the millennium. On April 4, 2003, Ingersoll International filed for Chapter 11 and closed its American operations for good, three years after the last family chairman died still writing that the company's culture would carry it into the next century.
