It was a historic moment, the first high-speed train to open, with technology transferred from France's Alstom. The KTX, imported at that time, is the one still in service today. For over a decade, the engineers at the Railway Vehicle Maintenance Team, who played a key role in this process, have been disassembling entire KTX trains, which are halfway through their lifespan, to perform "half-life maintenance." A full overhaul of each high-speed train takes 13 weeks. Even in the scorching August heat, the mechanics silently perform their duties. This is a 72-hour journey with the Seoul Metropolitan Area Railway Vehicle Maintenance Team, tirelessly replenishing oil day and night in a sweltering workshop with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. ■ A Workshop That Operates Day and Night The Seoul Metropolitan Area Railway Vehicle Maintenance Team maintains KTX trains arriving at the depot every day. During the day, they focus on "half-life maintenance" on fully disassembled trains and high-speed trains with reported fault codes. When high-speed trains return to the depot after service, they perform basic maintenance, including wheel inspections and cleaning and washing the interior and exterior of the trains. This routine for the maintenance crews repeats without fail, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day. ■ Watchmen on the Rails Weighing 701 tons and measuring 388 meters in length, the KTX is the largest form of transportation on earth. This is where the high-speed trains, which travel 17 hours a day, covering over 3,000 kilometers and carrying thousands of passengers, shake off their accumulated fatigue.
