The production facility belongs to the AvtoVAZ automotive group and is located on the Volga River – where the heart of the Russian automotive industry still beats today. The Lada Niva, now officially known as the Lada Niva Legend, is manufactured there from the ground up – from the body shell to final inspection. The robust steel superstructures are welded together in the typical unibody construction. The vehicles then pass through the paint shop, where they are first protected against rust with a cathodic dip coating and then painted in several layers. After painting, final assembly follows. This is where the all-wheel drive, the rigid rear axle, and the independent front suspension are installed, along with the 1.7-liter gasoline engine, the 5-speed manual transmission, the interior, and all electrical components. Finally, each vehicle undergoes a comprehensive quality control inspection. This includes a test drive during which the engine, transmission, steering, and brakes are checked. Despite modern production facilities, assembly remains largely manual, which is typical for vehicles with simple but durable technology. The Lada Niva features permanent all-wheel drive with low-gear ratio and differential lock. The vehicle was developed for tough off-road use and continues to perform well under the most challenging conditions. Its technical simplicity ensures high levels of ease of maintenance – one reason why the Niva is so popular, especially in remote regions and among off-road enthusiasts. Although Russia remains the main production location, the Niva was historically assembled in many countries using the so-called CKD process – for example, in Egypt, Greece, Uruguay, and Ecuador. Vehicle parts were delivered and assembled locally to save on customs costs and better serve markets. To this day, the Lada Niva fascinates with its timeless design, solid construction, and reputation as an indestructible off-roader.
