Yadah ~ A Holy Hallelujah
This original song is part of the Praise series. The Story Behind YADAH (I Lift My Hands) The inspiration for this song comes from the Hebrew word יָדָה (yadah). While it is often translated simply as "praise," its meaning is much richer. Yadah means to extend the hands, to give thanks, to confess, to acknowledge, and to worship. It is the picture of someone coming before God with empty hands and an open heart, recognizing who He is and trusting Him completely. This song begins where many of us live…without all the answers. We walk roads we cannot clearly see, carrying burdens, failures, fears, and unanswered questions. Yet even in uncertainty, God continues to call us to Himself. Rather than waiting until life is perfect, yadah invites us to come just as we are. The verses remind us that we bring everything to God: • our questions, • our victories, • our disappointments, • our hopes, • and our plans. The chorus becomes a sung definition of yadah itself: "I lift my hands to praise You… I lift my hands to thank You… I lift my hands, confess You… I lift my hands, acknowledge You…" These are not separate acts but different expressions of the same heart of worship. To lift our hands is to declare: • "I praise You because You are worthy." • "I thank You for Your goodness." • "I confess my need for You." • "I acknowledge that You alone are God." • "I surrender my life into Your hands." The second verse points to the greatest reason for our worship…the mercy of God through Jesus Christ. His sacrifice on the cross, His pursuit of us in our darkest moments, and His unfailing love remind us that we are accepted not because we deserve it, but because of His grace. The bridge expands the meaning of yadah into every season of life. Morning and evening, valleys and mountains, weakness and strength, sorrow and joy…all become opportunities to trust and worship the Lord. Praise is no longer dependent upon circumstances but upon the unchanging character of God. Near the end of the song, the repeated declarations… "To worship You… To thank You… To confess You… To acknowledge You…" …echo the ancient Hebrew understanding that worship engages the whole person: heart, mind, body, and spirit. Everything we are, is placed into God's hands because we first realize that our lives have always been held in His. The closing lines summarize the entire message: "Yadah… With all my heart. Yadah… You've never been far. Yadah… Forever I'll stand, Lifting my heart, Lifting my hands." Ultimately, this song is an invitation. It reminds us that worship is not reserved for people who have life figured out. It is for those who come honestly before God… with gratitude, confession, surrender, and hope... lifting empty hands to the One whose hands first reached out to us. "Let my prayer be counted as incense before You, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice." ~ Psalm 141:2 Lyrics by Kelly Ross-Hagans ASCAP# 937531116
