In today's Casa+, I visit a very special apartment in the center of Lisbon, designed by architect Andrea Chicharo. The property is part of the retrofit of a building approximately 200 years old and surprisingly combines preserved historical elements with a contemporary décor full of personality. During the visit, we discover the original 18th-century tile panels, the thick walls, the five-meter-high ceilings, and the Pombaline structure, a construction system created to make Lisbon buildings more resistant after the 1755 earthquake. Andrea shows us how she transformed these elements into protagonists of the project, highlighting each detail with lighting, works of art, Brazilian and European furniture, design pieces, and objects full of memory. The result is an elegant, welcoming, and very modern home, without erasing the marks of its history. We also visit the living room, dining room, kitchen, master suite, guest bedrooms, and the mezzanine office, discovering the choices and challenges of creating a functional apartment within a historic building. A project that proves that preservation doesn't mean living in the past. On the contrary, history, art, and design can coexist in a light, sophisticated, and vibrant way.
