Wood is the leading renewable energy source in France, meeting a quarter of the country's heating needs. Despite its renewable nature, its use raises many questions. Should we harvest wood or leave the forests undisturbed? If we harvest it, should we burn it or use it to make objects? If we burn it, should we do so in private homes or in heating plants? Here, we'll examine the volume of wood used in France, the complex relationship between using wood as a material and as an energy source, the impacts of harvesting on biodiversity, and, above all, the issue of air pollution, which is one of the biggest problems posed by wood as a heating fuel.
