Even after the KV-2 entered service, its performance in the intended bunker-busting role proved disappointing. Its concrete-penetrating ability fell short of expectations, and the gruelling experience of the Winter War left Soviet planners eager for a more capable weapon. In response, development began on the Object 212 self-propelled gun, envisioned as a far more potent bunker-buster. However, the German invasion in June 1941 radically reshaped Soviet priorities. Resources and design bureaus were redirected toward urgent wartime needs, slowing work on the Object 212 until the program was eventually cancelled altogether.
