Today’s journey starts from the “China’s First Road” scenic viewpoint in Longzhou County and ends at the historic Friendship Pass on the China–Vietnam border near Pingxiang City. 🚗 Route Overview: Start: “China’s First Road” Viewpoint, Longzhou County End: Friendship Pass, Pingxiang City Road: Longping Highway / Chongzuo X456 County Road Distance: Approx. 55 km This road is widely regarded as one of the earliest modern-style highways in China. Construction began in 1885 during the late Qing Dynasty and was completed in 1896. It was originally built after the Sino-French War to strengthen border defenses between China and Vietnam. The project was led by Guangxi military commander Su Yuanchun and was once known as the “Longnan Military Road.” Historically, the road was used to transport German Krupp artillery to the Friendship Pass fortifications. It also became one of the earliest roads in China to allow automobile traffic, with French vehicles entering from Vietnam during the late Qing era. Today, this historic border highway still winds through the beautiful karst mountains of southern Guangxi, passing villages, forests, and scenic border landscapes along the China–Vietnam frontier.
