I'M SO SORRY TO THE FLEMISH HERE IS MY ATONEMENT If you know my Bad Apple cover, the phrase "You forgot [insert language]!" must pass through the Three Gates™: Gate 1: I don't speak or feel comfortable singing in [insert language] Gate 2: There is no singable version of the song in [insert language] and I don't speak the language Gate 3: There are thousands of languages in the world and songs are not infinitely long I've decided to disregard all of this to make a(n unserious) point. And so! It is with disputable honour that I half-jokingly present: what happens when I sing and write lyrics in languages I don't speak — I hope you enjoy!! Some languages are not legislated or constitutionally established as official languages ('de jure') despite being widely accepted as the language of administration and/or daily life. These are treated as 'de facto' official languages, and some examples may be surprising. For example, English is the 'de facto' language of administration and public life in England, but not 'de jure', while English does hold 'de jure' status in Wales. Some nations also recognise languages nationally while their subdivisions specify at the regional level. For example, French is an official language of the nation of Canada, but Quebec and New Brunswick also list French as an official language provincially. In the interest of illustrating distribution, regional status takes precedence, while national status is recognised in grey. Although the terms in this video refer to a language's official status, they may sometimes also imply the status of geopolitical entities. Where territorial claims conflict, the language status of the internationally recognised sovereign entity takes precedence as 'de jure', while any administration exercising regional control is treated as 'de facto'. Where a territory is disputed, the language's status under both administrations is considered in accordance with the system I have established for the maps: • If a language has 'de jure' status only under a 'de facto' administration, it is marked as 'de facto' (striped). • If a language has 'de jure' status under the internationally recognised entity but not under the 'de facto' administration, it is marked in accordance with the grey schema. • If a language has 'de jure' status under both administrations, then for the purposes of this video it is treated as 'de jure' (black). The maps do not serve to endorse any territorial claims or geopolitical positions: they are maps to depict where languages are spoken on a specific scale with a set of consistent rules.
