Want to know the answer in theory and practice? A 110V to 12V transformer works very simply. We apply 110VAC to one side and we get 12VAC on the other. If we do the reverse process, that is, apply 12VAC to one side, we get 110VAC on the other. If we use a car battery on the 12V side, will we also get 110V on the other side? What does the theory tell us? When we have a coil in alternating current, we have what we call impedance, which is composed of resistance and inductive reactance (XL), which is the opposition to the passage of electric current offered by a coil. Like resistance, it is measured in ohms and can be calculated using the formula: 2πfL Note that we have two constants, the number 2 and π. Furthermore, the value of reactance is related to the inductance L and the frequency. In alternating current, 60Hz for example, we have a reactance value that, together with the resistance, gives us an impedance value, and that is why we don't have a short circuit when we apply voltage to the terminals of a transformer. In the case of direct current, the frequency is zero, so we have no reactance, and what remains is the value of the electrical resistance of the conductor. When connecting the automotive battery to the 12V side of our transformer, we will have the circulation of an electric current that can be obtained through Ohm's law I=V/R. Since there is no voltage variation, there will also be no flux variation, and the current should heat the conductors, but there will be no voltage on the secondary of the transformer.
