Square Enix Is Erasing Final Fantasy History

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is shutting down, but I think this raises a much bigger question than the fate of one mobile game. Over the years, Ever Crisis became more than just another gacha. It brought together the world of Final Fantasy VII through retellings of the original game, Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Advent Children, new stories featuring young Sephiroth, original artwork, costumes, music, and more. It wasn't a perfect game, I have a lot of criticisms of it and mobile games in general, but I also don't think imperfect games deserve to disappear. This also isn't just about Final Fantasy. Square Enix has shut down a ton of their mobile games over the years, and very few receive any kind of meaningful preservation. With Final Fantasy Brave Exvius coming back as Final Fantasy Resonance, it raises an important question: should more of these games be preserved? Should companies have a responsibility to preserve games once they reach the end of their lives, or is this simply the reality of live-service gaming?
