The Science of Autopsy and the Art of Grief | Dr Athanasia Vargiamidou & Katherine Bryan-Merrett

What does it really mean to care for the dead — medically, emotionally, and culturally? In this episode of Dead Honest, Dr Natasha Davendralingam is joined by two guests working at very different ends of the same spectrum. Dr Athanasia Vargamidou is a consultant histopathologist whose work in coronial autopsy practice is about finding answers when someone has died unexpectedly. Katherine Bryan-Merrett is a portrait and mural artist who works with bereaved families on memorial portraits and coffin painting sessions, helping them say goodbye through colour, story and ritual. Together they discuss the misconceptions that surround pathology, the gaps in how the coronial system supports the bereaved, the role of art in grief, and what working closely with death has taught them about how to live. They also share their own recent experiences of losing a parent, and the very different shapes that grief took for each of them.
