Rail line to Foynes Ireland 1978. The Foynes rail link is being re-opened for freight/passengers.
In 1978 the Irish Railway Record Society and the Locomotive Club of Great Britain organised a rail tour from Dublin to Foynes and back. At the time the Foynes branch was only open for freight. The railtour also traversed the Mullingar to Athlone line, which closed in 1987. Iarnród Éireann are now working to re-open the line to Foynes, which is situated on the River Shannon, for freight. It will look completely different from 1978! The line is being restored for freight use, and there are hopes to introduce passenger services in time for the Ryder Cup at Adare in 2027. These plans have been temporarilly delayed following court action against Iarnród Éireann over the removal of a bridge deck for restoration. #railways #train #trainspotting #travel #irishrail #cie #iarnródéireann #foynes #irishrailways https://ko-fi.com/clivestravelandtrains is the link to Ko-fi, where you can sponsor me with a coffee!
