Repent in a Way That Doesn't Work! | Halis Hoca (Abu Hanzala) To stay up-to-date on our special posts, which we don't publish on our other social media accounts, you can subscribe to our WhatsApp line by clicking the link; https://bit.ly/2xHiHzN Brothers and sisters, sometimes loyalty is a matter of repentance. Sometimes a person commits a sin. Then they want to return to their Lord. Some return to their Lord with sincerity. Some return to their Lord with deceit. Who is an example of someone who returns to their Lord with sincerity? The woman companion who committed adultery, as narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim, is considered an adulteress. After committing adultery, she came to the Messenger of Allah and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a sin. Purify me." Normally, no one has seen it. No one is aware of this woman's adultery. But faith has taken such a deep root in her heart that she could not bear the burden of that adultery, that sin. She came to the Messenger of Allah and said, "O Messenger of Allah, purify me." The Messenger of Allah said, "Go and give birth to this child, and then we'll see. It might happen that the woman runs away and saves herself. The woman came back after giving birth to the child. O Messenger of Allah, I gave birth to the child, and the child is here. Fulfill the prescribed limits for me and purify me." The Prophet said, "Go and breastfeed your child for two years. Wean the child from a pacifier. After that." It might happen that the woman disappeared in the meantime. The woman came two years later and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I breastfed the child. I've completed two years. Fulfill the prescribed limits for me and purify me." The Prophet (pbuh) gave her the prescribed limits. Then she would perform the funeral prayer. Of course, would Omar (ra) ever stop? He came to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah, will you pray for such a sinner?" The Prophet said, "He repented with such repentance that, by God, if it were distributed among seventy sinners from the people of Medina, it would be sufficient for all of them." In other words, when a woman who committed adultery sincerely turns to God, feels the burning pain of sin in her heart, and turns to her Lord, God says that through her repentance, she can forgive seventy people. On the other hand, there are those who lie in their repentance. There are those who devise the plan for their sin while still repenting. While they are still repenting, they are saying, 'O God, forgive me,' while in the act of repentance, they are actually saying, 'I swear, I cannot bear it. I will return to the same sin.' Mansur ibn Ammar says, "I had a friend. He said, 'I had a sinful friend who was very self-inflicted and excessive in his own self.' One time, he repented with such repentance that he... We'd always see him either crying or during the night prayer. During the day, he says, we'd always see him fasting. For a while, I couldn't hear him in the mosque. I asked him and asked, and they said he was lying at home, very ill. I went to my friend's house and saw that he was in the throes of death, meaning he was dead or about to die. I went to him and told him, "He says, 'My friend, say 'La ilahe illallah.' He opened his eyes," he said, but he couldn't answer. 'My friend, say 'La ilahe illallah.' He said, 'He says, 'La ilahe illallah.' Look, you're giving your life away.' He said to me, 'O Mansur, this is such a word that Allah has placed a veil between me and that word. I can't say that word, don't force me.' I said, 'O so-and-so, those night prayers you performed, those tears flowing from your eyes, those fasts you offered to Allah—where did they go? That sincere repentance of yours?' He turned to me and said, "O Mansur, all of them were for beings other than Allah. They were so that people would say, so that people would value me." My brothers, such repentance, in the end of life, when a person would give their life, has no benefit whatsoever for a person. The story of a man named Jurayj, one of the Children of Israel, is told according to a hadith narrated by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
