Teaching Questioning with Informational Texts in First Grade (REL West)

This video was created by REL West as part of the Toolkit for Teaching K–3 Reading Comprehension. In the video, you’ll see a first grade teacher teach her students how to ask and answer questions about informational text. The class uses the question “How does this fit with what I already know?” to focus their reflection and dialogue with their peers. The teacher provides a gradual release of responsibility from direct instruction and modeling to providing more independence in practicing and applying the comprehension strategy. She also teaches her students to identify and use the text’s organizational structure to understand what they have read. This recording was prepared for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) under Contract 91990022C0003 by Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) West at WestEd.
