I’ve been following Punch-kun’s growth at the Ichikawa City Zoo & Botanical Garden. Since I visit frequently, I usually film from the back rather than the front row. I watch Punch-kun through the gaps in the crowd. Of course, if the place is completely empty, I’ll watch from the front row, but otherwise, I stay in the back. I watch from the back during feeding time, too. Punch-kun is a Japanese macaque born on July 26, 2025. He began living on the monkey mountain at the Ichikawa City Zoo & Botanical Garden on January 19, 2026. He does have a mother, but due to it being her first birth and the summer heat, she ended up abandoning him. Zookeepers raised him since he couldn't survive on his own, but they decided that keeping him solely under human care wouldn't be best for him in the long run; so, on January 19, 2026, they released him onto the monkey mountain to monitor his progress. When he first arrived, he was bullied by various older monkeys but endured it desperately; watching him grow little by little was truly inspiring. As for the orangutan plushie Punch-kun carries (nicknamed "Oran-Mama"): Japanese macaques, like humans, grow up being raised by their mothers, and the lack of a mother causes stress. When he was given an IKEA orangutan plushie, he started hugging it. It seems he did the same thing in the past when given a Rilakkuma plushie. That other monkey (Otome-chan) apparently let go of her plushie and became independent around 1 year and 2 months of age, so Punch-kun might also let go of "Oran-Mama" in a few months. By the way, did you know Otome-chan is also at the same zoo? She became a huge hit worldwide, capturing hearts with her adorable appearance as she cuddled her orangutan plushie. Let’s all keep a close watch on Panch-kun together!
