Before Chicago made house music, Detroit made the soul that lived inside it. On January 12, 1959, a former boxer named Berry Gordy Jr. walked into a building at 2648 West Grand Boulevard with an $800 loan from his family. He hung a sign over the door: HITSVILLE U.S.A. He built music like Ford built cars. Assembly line. Precision. Volume. Smokey Robinson. Marvin Gaye. Diana Ross. Stevie Wonder. The Temptations. The Supremes. Between 1960 and 1969 — 79 top-ten Billboard hits. From one city block in Detroit. The building is still there. The sign still reads HITSVILLE U.S.A. And a $50 million museum is being built around it, scheduled to open in 2026. Then came the second wave. Three teenagers from Belleville — a small town 30 miles outside Detroit — sat in darkened rooms listening to Kraftwerk and Parliament and heard something nobody else heard yet. Juan Atkins. Derrick May. Kevin Saunderson. The Belleville Three. They didn't just absorb the soul Detroit gave them. They rebuilt it with synthesizers and drum machines. Derrick May once described what they created as "George Clinton and Kraftwerk caught in an elevator with only a sequencer to keep them company." That elevator became Detroit Techno.
