In 1740, Nader Shah stood at the height of his power. He had seized Iran’s throne, humbled the Ottomans, crushed the Mughals, and returned from India believing no enemy could stop him. But while the conqueror looked outward, his empire began cracking from within. His young son Reza Qoli ruled harshly in his absence, murdered the remaining Safavid princes, built his own glittering military household, and ignored his father’s orders. Nader punished him, then marched toward the Oxus to subdue Bukhara and Khiva, winning another rapid victory and taking the title Shahanshah — King of Kings. Yet the triumph only deepened his confidence and isolation. In Dagestan, the mountainous terrain, guerrilla warfare, failed supply lines, and Lezgi resistance exposed the limits of his army. An assassination attempt in 1741 turned Nader’s suspicion into paranoia. When a captured suspect accused Reza Qoli of plotting the attack, the Shah chose a brutal punishment: he blinded his own heir. This episode follows Nader Shah’s turn from brilliant conqueror to increasingly unstable ruler — and the tragedy that foretold the collapse of his empire. It is the moment victory stopped building his legend and began destroying the man behind it from inside out forever.
