And the name of this Bakerganj was heard beyond the subcontinent and in important countries of the world. A few hundred years ago, Bakerganj, surrounded by rivers, was a bustling ancient trading center. Foreign merchants used to come here to import and export goods, even with trade ships. Elephants with royal tattoos from India used to come to the royal palace. If you look at an old map, you can understand how large this Bakerganj was. The historical Bakerganj, known throughout the world, has lost that tradition and is now confined to just one upazila. There is no such thing in the history of Bangladesh anymore, the history of coming down from district to upazila. Many of the current generation do not know about that old glory. I hear how that name and history were erased. This region was famous for paddy, rice, sugarcane, and salt. And that is why Bakerganj was the main attraction for foreign merchants and trade. During the Mughal and Nawabi periods, Bakerganj and Patuakhali districts were known as Bakla and Chandradwip. After the Battle of Plassey, the independent-minded people of Bakerganj resisted the tyrannical British. Several Englishmen were killed in this rebellion. To suppress the rebels, the British decided to form an independent district with Bakerganj. At that time, Bakerganj was included in Dhaka district. The Governor General of India, Sir John Shore, declared the present Bakerganj a district in 1797 AD. Thus, Bakerganj gained full authority of the East India Company.
