Exploring Victoria Lines | Malta's Forgotten Great Wall

Did you know Malta has its own Great Wall? I walk the famous Victoria Lines, often called the "Great Wall of Malta"—a remarkable 12-kilometre line of Victorian military fortifications stretching across the island's natural Great Fault. Built by the British between 1870 and 1899, the Victoria Lines were designed to defend the northern approaches to the Grand Harbour by sealing off the easier invasion routes from Malta's northern beaches. The route follows a dramatic natural escarpment that had already been recognised for its defensive value centuries earlier by the Knights of St John. Originally known as the North West Front, the fortifications were renamed the Victoria Lines in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The walk includes spectacular viewpoints, rugged countryside, and the historic forts of Madliena, Mosta, and Bingemma. Despite the scale of the project and the strategic importance of the fortifications, the Victoria Lines were never tested in battle. ✨ Join Us on Our Travel Adventures!
