WWE Backlash 2006: Edge vs John Cena vs Triple H (SmackDown vs RAW 2007)

At WWE WrestleMania 22, John Cena entered Chicago and retained the WWE Championship against veteran superstar Triple H. The win was a monumental one for Cena, and the victory was even more meaningful due to the fact that he made Triple H tap out. Riding an incredible wave of momentum, John Cena arrived on the RAW after WrestleMania prepared for the next chapter in his WWE career. Not willing to part ways with the WWE Champion, Triple H made his way down to the ring and claimed that the only reason Cena won was because The Game took him too lightly. Knowing not to make that mistake again, Triple H demanded a rematch for the gold, but there was another superstar that felt he deserved a title shot as well. Having been victorious in his WrestleMania 22 contest against the Hardcore Legend Mick Foley, Edge (alongside Lita) felt that it was his turn to become number one contender. Refusing to wait in line any longer, Edge also demanded a title opportunity, and it appeared that Triple H could be pushed aside. Rather than booking a singles match for the upcoming Backlash event, WWE chose to have John Cena defend the gold in a triple threat match. Three of RAW's top superstars would compete for the WWE title at Backlash 2006, but only one would walk out as WWE Champion.
