Is your expensive sealed-drag trout reel actually waterproof? In this video I investigate whether it's really safe (or recommended) to dunk your high-end fly reels in the river while trout fishing. During May/June 2026 I was forced to send my Bat Black Hatch Iconic 4+ reel to Hatch in the US for a drag repair / drag rebuild. A couple of years go I had to do the same for my first Hatch reel, my beloved Campfire Orange Hatch Iconic 5+ (drag completely seized in freezing conditions on the Eucumbene River). Fast forward, and I reflect on the fact that 3 out of my 5 Hatch Iconic reels have now needed drag repairs due to water ingress. At roughly $1,500 AUD per reel, that's a concerning hit rate for premium "sealed" reels.
