Wesel: Auto in den Rhein gestürzt - Fahrzeug mit drei Leichen geborgen

On Monday evening (February 28th) around 7:15 p.m., several emergency calls were received by the police and fire department dispatch centers in Wesel. A car was reported to have driven into the Rhine River on Hafenstraße. This was confirmed at the scene. The fire department, water police, and police responded with numerous personnel. A police helicopter was also requested. According to initial information, the vehicle was carrying five occupants. Two young men, aged 17 and 20, were rescued and transported to a hospital by ambulance. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation by the police and public prosecutor's office. The recovery of the vehicle and the remaining occupants could not be carried out during the night. The operation will resume this morning (March 1st). We will provide further updates. Since daybreak on Tuesday (March 1st), police and fire departments have continued their search for the vehicle that drove into the Rhine River on Hafenstraße the previous evening. A 17-year-old and a 20-year-old from Wesel were rescued and taken to a hospital. Initial questioning of the two young men revealed that three other people had been in the wrecked Audi at the time of the accident. An underwater drone from the water police was deployed in the morning to search for the wreckage. However, this operation was unsuccessful. Police divers were then called in, who, due to the strong current of the Rhine near the harbor wall, had to be lowered into the water by ropes. Initial reports indicated that the divers had discovered the submerged Audi on the bottom at a depth of approximately 6 meters. The car was located at the edge of the harbor basin, below a crane. The recovery operation was successfully carried out in the afternoon with the help of an additional excavator. Now, what had already been feared appears to be confirmed: the recovered silver Audi presumably contained the bodies of the three missing occupants.
