Ali al-Zaidi is a businessman with no political background who became a consensus candidate to be Iraq's next prime minister after the country's parliamentary deadlock. Trump has strongly backed al-Zaidi, with the Republican president calling al-Zaidi's leadership a "tremendous new chapter" for U.S.-Iraq relations. Al-Zaidi has focused on tackling corruption since taking office, arresting several officials. Al-Zaidi's visit Tuesday aims to strengthen economic ties and attract investment. However, discussions will likely include pressure on Iraq to disarm Iran-backed militias. A U.S. official says decisions will be based on Iraq's efforts to address this issue.
