Carcassonne vs Perpignan vs Narbonne: Which Train Trip Is Worth It?

Three towns in Southern France. We left Béziers with two bags and three cities on the list: Carcassonne, Perpignan, and Narbonne. One train loop, two overnight stays, and $403 out of pocket for two people, or $672 if you count the hotel points at cash value. New to our story? Start from the beginning:    • We Sold Our House to Retire Early and Move...   What's Inside This Episode Carcassonne delivered exactly what it promised — medieval walls, dramatic towers, and a cassoulet dinner inside the city at night after the day-trippers left. It's the most famous stop on this loop for a reason, and it earns it. It also costs more, draws bigger crowds, and doesn't pretend to be anything other than a tourist destination. Perpignan was the one we didn't see coming. Catalan street signs, palm trees, pink marble, and a border city energy that felt nothing like southern France. Dinner for two came to $51. The city left us wanting to go back. Narbonne was fifteen minutes from our front door and required almost no planning. Flat, walkable, and home to one of the best indoor markets we've visited. We dropped our bags at a tabac near the station using the Bounce app, spent the day on foot, and were back in Béziers by evening. We used Chase Sapphire points for both hotels, keeping our actual out-of-pocket costs for two nights of accommodation to $11.20.
