Vodka Politics Offers Lens on Russia
Political scientist Mark Lawrence Schrad says Russia's high alcohol consumption is rooted less in culture than in centuries of state policy, arguing successive governments used vodka monopolies to raise revenue, strengthen autocratic control and shape society.
