Egglestone Abbey: Haunted Ruins on the Tees | Cinematic 4K Film

Perched picturesquely above a sweeping bend of the River Tees, roughly 1.5 miles southeast of Barnard Castle, County Durham, Egglestone Abbey is the haunting, beautifully preserved ruin of a small medieval monastery. Founded between 1195–1198 by the de Multon family, it belonged to the Premonstratensian Order — known as the White Canons for their bright white habits — who lived by strict, austere rules similar to the Cistercians. Always modest in size and chronically poor, it suffered Scottish raids, border conflicts, and heavy taxes for centuries until dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540. Afterwards, parts were turned into a private house; later stone was reused elsewhere, leaving the graceful shell we see today — cared for now by English Heritage and free to visit. Standing beneath wide skies, the surviving stonework glows soft grey‑gold in changing light. You can trace much of the 13th‑century church, with tall slender lancet windows still piercing its east wall; alongside stand ruins of living quarters, chapter house, and traces of an ingenious medieval drainage system. The quiet riverside setting — steep banks, rushing water, and rolling Teesdale hills — gives it a deeply peaceful, timeless atmosphere.
