Completing the most exclusive hike on Oahu

Once again, Headband Trekker and his friend Boonie Cap Bandit take on the most exclusive trail on Oahu, Hawai’i, the Kolekole trail. They turned back early the last time, but this time they will get to the top. Kolekole Trail takes you to Puu Hapapa, the fifth highest mountain on the Waianae range. The trail itself is well graded at the start. Taking you pass the famous sacrificial rock and to the Lualualei overlook. From here, look for the trail going left through the California grass to a tunnel of trees. The trail continues past eroded sections and then to a stand of paper bark trees. It is here that there is a split to take the more exhilarating path up and through two notches. This variation takes you on the Honouliuli Contour Trail instead by passing the rock scrambling notches. Instead it takes you along the contour pass a stream creek and up a finger ridge that connects directly to Puu Hapapa. Once on the finger ridge, it is a straight up hike with expansive views of Schofield. The trail is well defined though it can be overgrown due to limited hiking traffic. There are a few rock scrambles and cliff drops but nothing too dangerous. Once the finger ridge connects with the main Waianae Summit Trail, the views will be on both sides, to the south west and north east. Puu Hapapa tops out at about 2800 feet with expansive 360 degree views. In all a good mix experience hike with contour, stream, and open ridge hiking.
